How can it be May already – the year almost half past, but wait! I’m still not used to writing 2017! May already, and students are preparing to graduate high school when wait, weren’t they were just toddling down the aisle for children’s time? Maybe it’s getting my Medicare card this month, maybe it’s becoming a grandmother, and remembering my own now long gone, and how many chapters have sped by since, that the words of the old hymn come back.
Are like an evening gone;
Short as the watch that ends the night
Before the rising sun.
Short is right. Blink twice and suddenly here’s 18 or 30 or 65 and if we’re lucky 80 but wait! Where’d the time go? Maybe it’s all this, along with the Easter story that’s got me thinking about mortality –what passes, and immortality-what lasts. Seems like Jesus knew all along time was passing all too quickly, and took every opportune moment to make a lasting impression – create indelible memories. Healing here, teaching there, sharing a meal with a few or thousands, all laying out his legacy, what he wanted to be known and remembered for. We tell his story still, every Sunday gathering round the table to celebrate his life and let it teach us something about ours.
It was Easter 1954 when this church was founded, a service in a neighbor’s backyard. Now some 63 years later, so many seasons past, what is LCC known for? What do we want to be known for? What difference will our having been here make? What can we set about intentionally to do and be, knowing now is the opportune time? And oh how quickly it passes!
Loving living the questions with you,
