Is Truth Dead?

You may have seen it, posted or at a newsstand: the most recent Time magazine cover, solid black with bold red lettering. “Is Truth Dead?” The cover is a deliberate take on the iconic cover from the sixties, same black and red graphic, only this asked “Is God Dead?” Now in this time when “alternative facts” actually make ground, when science is denied and total falsehoods spin daily from the highest office, the question Time asks has lamentable legitimacy.

As we move towards Passion Week and the cross, anticipating Easter Resurrection, I can’t help thinking of the scene from John’s gospel when Jesus is arrested and brought before Pilate. Under interrogation regarding whether or not he claims treasonous kingship, Jesus says, For this I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice.” Pilate responds, “What is truth?” And the dialogue stops there. A powerful silence.

“To testify to the truth”. Now more than ever this seems the gospel mandate for us, even as Jesus claimed it as his. Is truth dead? Followers of Jesus, we have his word, his life as testimony to the gospel truth, truth we are called to proclaim and make manifest, What is truth? The gospel of Christ tells us. Compassion counts. Lives matter. Justice requires our effort. Equality is our birthright, Love trumps hate. Resurrection happens.

What is truth? In English, the word goes back to the old English “triewth” and means “faithfulness, constancy.” Is Truth Dead? Is God Dead? Let Easter speak. And may we be bold to testify.

In Easter faith and joy,
