Second Hour Discussion: Can We Use Clouds For Cooling?

March 17 @ 11:00 am - 12:00 pm

What if we were able to temporarily create bright marine clouds?  This could cool areas of the ocean to keep it from overheating and killing marine life.  Come hear a fascinating talk by Dr. Armand Neukermans about how this might be done and what the gain would be for the marine environment and climate change.

A volunteer group of scientists and engineers was started in 2009 at the request of a small private Gates climate initiative. The initial goal was to improve the study of cloud formation and behavior, which is a major unknown in climate models.  However, the increase in climate disasters and the extraordinary temperature rise in 2023 forced the scientists to reconsider the project goals. The same research techniques used for locally whitening marine clouds, applied on a more massive scale could possibly be used to cool the earth globally by reflecting sunlight.
