Hildegard of Bingen – Getting to Know Her

Hildegard of Bingen – Getting to Know Her
A discussion led by Colleen Crangle
Four Sundays over the summer: July 23, July 30, August 13, August 27
11a.m. – 12p.m.
Hildegard was an 11th century German Benedictine abbess, active as a writer, composer, mystic, visionary, and as a medical writer and practitioner during the High Middle Ages.
We will be meeting 11a.m. – 12p.m. after the service on four Sundays over the summer to explore her writings within their historical context. We will read and discuss selections from an annotated introduction to Hildegard’s texts and listen to her music. Hildegard is something of an enigma, a powerful and accomplished woman yet one who embraced repressive literal Biblical interpretations of a woman’s place in the natural and spiritual world. Examining her work will help us navigate our own faith journeys.
“We cannot live in a world that is not our own, in a world that is interpreted for us by others. An interpreted world is not a home. Part of the terror is to take back our own listening, to use our own voice, to see our own light.” − Hildegard of Bingen
Join us and meanwhile enjoy Hildegard’s “Voices of Angels – Voices of Ascension”.
What: Reading from the annotated Hildegard of Bingen: Essential Writings and Chants of a Christian Mystic, Annotated & Explained by Dr. Sheryl A. Kujawa-Holbrook (Translator), listening to Hildegard’s music, and discussing her thoughts on the spiritual and natural world.
